Flagler County A.R.E.S.®
Flagler County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (A.R.E.S.®)
The Flagler County Amateur Radio Emergency Service is a field organization of licensed Ham Radio operators sponsored by the
American Radio Relay League (ARRL). Its purpose is to provide back up emergency, and public service communications to the community.
Each A.R.E.S.® member is registered with the Flagler County RACES Net, and also a FCC licensed amateur radio operator.
About The A.R.E.S.® Organization
A.R.E.S.® is a field organization of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL).
The ARRL is a large national organization of amateur radio operators. A.R.E.S.® was organized to allow better coordination of amateur radio communications during emergencies.
Florida is divided into to sections, North Florida and South Florida. Each section is then divided into districts.
Flagler County is part of the North Florida Section, East Central Florida District, A.R.E.S.®
The Role of Flagler County A.R.E.S.®
Flagler County A.R.E.S.® provides back up communications via amateur radio, when regular systems go down, or overload. During the 1998 wildfires, amateur radio operators provided communications from the Emergency Operations Center to the various shelters.
The prime mission of A.R.E.S.® is to link the shelters to the EOC, and also link other critical facilities and locations, including the Hospital, other Emergency Service agencies, and field locations.
A.R.E.S.® also provides links out of Flagler County, and to the State Emergency Management.
Antennas are located on each shelter for amateur radio communications.
A.R.E.S.® members also support the SKYWARN severe weather spotter networks, when severe weather is a threat. Most A.R.E.S.® members are trained as SKYWARN spotters.
